Moth Bean, known as Nari Payiru (நரிப்பயிறு / நரிப்பயறு) in Tamil, is a small-seeded legume belonging to the species Vigna aconitifolia. It is traditionally associated with dryland agriculture and is cultivated particularly under rainfed conditions. The mature dry seeds are used as a pulse, while the crop is also used in traditional farming systems.

Moth beans can be soaked and cooked for traditional preparations such as sundal, kuzhambu and masiyal, and the seeds can also be sprouted for use in food preparations. Moth bean flour and cooked or sprouted seeds are used in different Indian dishes. The mature seeds are small and typically brownish or mottled, with a mild earthy flavour when cooked.
