Kalakkai Thokku is a traditional South Indian-style condiment prepared using Kalakkai (Carissa carandas), a small, naturally sour fruit also known as karonda or Bengal currant. The fruit is commonly used in Indian pickles and other savoury preparations. Kalakkai has a distinctly tangy flavour, making it well suited to spicy, oil-based thokku and pickle preparations.

This thokku has a thick, coarse consistency with a characteristic combination of sour, spicy and savoury flavours. It can be enjoyed as an accompaniment to everyday South Indian meals, particularly with rice-based dishes, idli and dosa. Traditional Kalakkai pickle preparations are also commonly served with curd rice and other mixed-rice dishes
